Midvale United Methodist Church

The following photos depict some of the Midvale United Methodist Church's history from it's beginnings in 1867 until the present. The photos and history were provided through the courtesy of the Church.

For a thorough history, click here to view a copy of a Church issued booklet, "Midvale United Methodist Church, 1867 - 1992".

The original church was built around 1867 on the northside of Conklintown Road, just east of today's Ringwood Avenue. It was originally known as the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the above photo, from around the turn of the twentieth century, the Greenwood Lake Railroad track is visible just beyond the church. To the far, distant right is an earlier Midvale School.

The original building measured about thirty by fourty feet and was clapboard on a wooden frame. In 1909, in order to better serve the community and be closer to the center of the village of Midvale, the church was moved to it's current location. Viewing the church today, the original section would be on the right as viewed from Ringwood Avenue.

An addition was added to the original building and dedicated in 1911. This would be the section on the left side of the structure as seen in the above two photos. There were twelve memorial windows installed in 1915. The left, color photo shows a protrusion on the left wall. This existed during a period of time when semi-circular pews, on a sloping floor, faced that northern wall. This was later changed with straight pews on a level floor facing east. An addition was also built at the east end of the church and a pipe organ installed. These changes occurred in and about 1927 and can be seen in the right photo dated that year.

An interior view.

The church continues to maintain a character only found in structures from years past. The tin ceilings and walls with their intricate details, the woodwork and stained glass all make this building unique and a part of Wanaque's history.

Again, a special thanks to the Midvale United Methodist Church and Pastor Donald DeGroat.
